In his 23 years of experience, no sight had ever frightened Dr. Gerard as much as the photograph of Lola the gorilla. The usually gentle giant had changed completely, and Dr. Gerard knew immediately that this was a matter of life or death.

Lola seemed unusually tired, her boundless energy showing signs of fatigue. She rested more frequently, lying down for extended periods instead of being her usual active self. Soon, this mild exhaustion turned into a significant decline in her behavior.

Lola, the gentle giant gorilla of Ardenwood Zoo, was loved by everyone who met her. Her ebony fur, soft and sleek, shimmered like polished obsidian in the golden sunlight. But it was her soulful eyes that truly captivated hearts. They were deep and expressive, radiating warmth that seemed to reach out to every visitor.

The other gorillas at the zoo were consistently intimidated by Lola. Her dominant and commanding presence made her a figure of fear among them. Because of her overwhelming personality, they tended to avoid her, often keeping their distance.

Lola’s strong, assertive nature meant that she was not easily approached or engaged with by her fellow gorillas, who generally shunned her to steer clear of potential conflicts. Her intimidating demeanor created a clear divide, leading the other gorillas to stay away and interact with her as little as possible.

For those who spent time with her, Lola was more than just an exhibit. She embodied grace and strength, making her a cherished symbol of serenity and resilience. As time passed, a noticeable change began to overshadow Lola’s once vibrant presence.

What started as a subtle shift gradually became more pronounced. Lola, who had always been enthusiastic about her favorite activities, began to withdraw. She stopped engaging in her playful routines, like swinging from ropes and climbing with effortless grace.

The enrichment toys that once sparked her curiosity now lay untouched, gathering dust in her enclosure. The once lively gorilla, a symbol of vitality and exuberance, now seemed disconnected and subdued, indicating something was seriously wrong.

Tom, the gorilla keeper at Ardenwood Zoo, who knew a lot about animal pregnancies, thought Lola’s worsening behavior was just part of the normal changes that come with being pregnant.

The zoo keepers were trained to handle pregnancy issues. Tom thought Lola’s problems were probably just a normal part of being pregnant. He believed these changes were common in pregnant animals and that Lola’s symptoms were just her body getting ready for motherhood.
